WHO IS MR. DARKNESS?

As I grow older, I become more intrigued by themes of death, mortality, the occult, and the supernatural. Maybe that’s why our clan embraces dark magic. It’s natural to ponder our existence as we age, and maybe your magic journey will also be drawn to the darkness.

I wear many hats, but some don’t quite fit with my corporate roles in acting, marketing, and technology. To avoid conflict I adopted an anonymous persona, much like others in our field to stay in the shadows online.

In high school, I earned the nickname ‘Darkness,’ partly because it rhymed with my last name and partly for other reasons it just sounded cool, so it stuck. It somehow felt authentic. So, MR. Darkness is the closest thing to my real self without inventing a fake name. Besides, I’ve always enjoyed a good debate and diving into deep, challenging discussions. Often to the dismay of others who are not so accommodating.

When I transitioned from IT to the movie industry, focusing on writing, directing, acting, and filming horror shorts, magic remained a constant in my life. Early on I found mainstream magic self-centred and cringy until I discovered the fascinating niche of Bizarre Magick or “Shadow Mentalism”. I created a brand of darker story-based mentalism effects, such as The VVitch, Seven Sins, N.E.C.R.O., The Druid, The Tooth Fairy, etc.

Ultimately, if I’m going to perform “magic,” I’d rather embrace a darker, alternative style, without veering into the territory of a brooding goth or hipster mage; I’ll leave that to the cool kids. At the same time, I’m not aiming to be the clichéd dark wizard teetering on self-parody. And joining the vanilla corporate crowd? That’s not my scene either. Laugh if you dare, but remember, my dark side always strikes back.

I suggest being authentic, use a memorable name, stay in your lane, and, above all, entertain while serving the audience’s darkest desires. After all that’s how MR. Darkness was born.

FOR THE LOVE of DARK MAGIC

Bizarre Magick, or what I like to call ‘Shadow Mentalism,’ isn’t particularly commercial. Beyond familiar tropes like ringing bells or spirit slates, encountering truly dark magic is a rare experience. The above effects are reminiscent of B-horror movies and fairly stock in trade. If you can appreciate their charm, the more power to you.

However, consider the appeal of great horror movies that draw crowds. What if magic could evoke more disturbing emotions beyond a haunted key and be highly sought after?

Few performers venture into the realm of terror, crafting a dark, atmospheric world or weaving eerie tales that plunge into psychological horror. Most do not even have the common sense to turn off the fluorescent lights. If you can’t invest in a cheap LED panel or two from amazon, why are you doing this exactly?

Sure, a Gothic costume and edgy ad copy might set the stage, but are you truly delivering the experience you promised, or is the audience walking away with something completely different?

Let’s be honest, eating razor blades as a geek one moment and then performing the cups and balls the next creates a jarring disconnect in this context.

Yes, I understand the audience needs moments of release and a natural ebb and flow throughout a performance, but let’s not derail the crazy train entirely! Don’t even get me started with adding card tricks! There is no place for that in this world or the next.

Why choose to perform dark magic? One reason is to break away from the usual magician type and the clichés that often come with it. Another is to elicit a deeper, more intense reaction from the audience.

Magic was initially feared for its link to unseen forces, with the Church amplifying this fear by condemning it as heretical and aligning it with demonic influence. So it stands to reason to go full dark for maximum effect if you dare.

Magic’s roots are undeniably dark. While it has evolved into many forms, Shadow Mentalism is largely overlooked. Why? Maybe it’s about lack of money from empty seats? But if that’s the case, why are horror movies a billion-dollar industry?

The truth is there’s little excuse beyond the creative limitations of the artist.

This segment of entertainment often leans on low-hanging fruit. Simply buying what’s available, mashing it together, and hoping to make a name for yourself doesn’t do our art form any justice.

Why perform dark magic? It’s what people need and want, even if they don’t realize it and here’s why!

Psychologists connect the anxiety caused by uncertainty to the reason we perceive certain people or situations as creepy. Research has demonstrated that individuals who visit frightening attractions experience improved moods and reduced stress levels. Encountering scary situations can lead to feelings of euphoria and a sense of accomplishment.

When in a safe environment, our brain can interpret a threat response as high-arousal, similar to joy or happiness. Unpredictable or startling events trigger this reaction. However, once we recognize that we are not in danger, we rapidly transition to enjoyment and euphoria. This explains why people often go from screaming to laughing.

Who comprises horror’s most devoted enthusiasts? It’s those aged between 30 and 44, a demographic hailing from the 1980s and early 1990s, considered by many as the pinnacle of American horror. In the U.S., horror is the second favourite TV and movie genre among Gen Zers (aged 13-26), with comedy taking first place.

What that means is a demographic market aged 13-44 is likely to enjoy a good creepy fright. The numbers support the healthy growth of our form of dark entertainment.

Now is the best time for unconventional magicians delving into the realm of spirit summoning and otherworldly narratives to reach out to an established audience base and serve their needs.

Like a horror movie providing cathartic relief for anxiety and depression, your show’s success relies on a relevant connection with the audience. Modern magicians understand that traditional props and tired spooky tropes lead to less-than-enthusiastic responses from “sophisticated” horror audiences.

Does the content of your show lack the impact suggested by your marketing efforts?

There’s a craving for fresh material that truly satisfies your audience’s appetite, leaving them savouring the experience long after the curtain falls.

Entertainers in our alternative genre often face challenges in obtaining the necessary resources for effects and props to craft a unique and intense show. If you’re ready to combine theatre, horror, and magic to create a truly immersive and chilling experience that exceeds your audience’s expectations, you’re in the right place. I’m here to help you bring the fear factor to life in your performance.

Step into the realm of authentic macabre theatre – welcome to the MR. Darkness experience!

N.3.C.R.0 - IBM LINKING RING REVIEW

N.3.C.R.O. is one of those rare pocket effects that work for mainstream magicians, mystery entertainers, séance workers, or hardcore bizarrists who prefer darker and more disturbing performance pieces. The premise is that you and your audience will explore the rumors surrounding an infamous American Victorian-era lunatic asylum. The asylum is a place where a secret medical society allegedly existed. This society believed that unexplained medical conditions in some of their patients were, in fact, cases of demonic possession.

A spectator freely selects one of sixteen morgue toe tags. Each tag contains six pieces of information unique to that deceased patient and the experiments performed on him. Even though only the spectator knows the information, you begin to reveal bits and pieces of the experiments. As you disclose the information, a sinister story begins to form, leading to a disturbing conclusion. The scripting is tight and logically builds to a satisfying and disquieting conclusion.

The backstory is solid, the toe tag props are aged and look authentic, the reveal process is easy to follow and logical, and the effect is impactful. Use it as a one-on-one mental mystery for mainstream close-up or parlor audiences or as the centerpiece for a sinister foray into the supernatural for a mystery evening event. It’s perfect for séance work.

The price of the aged toe tags may seem a bit steep, but the aging process adds considerably to the story’s believability. N.3.C.R.O. packs small (it fits in your pocket), but the effect plays strong. I added a pendulum to the effect and enjoyed excellent reactions. By the way, N.3.C.R.O. stands for Neuro Ethereal Craniotomy Research of the Occult. Were the asylum patients possessed, or was it all in their head? The answer depends on your audience.

Highly Recommended.

THE DRUID ESP

THE DRUID - IBM LINKING RING REVIEW

The Druid ESP set is one of those rare products that comes along about every decade and completely reframes a classic of magic in a way that significantly bolsters the performer’s ability to connect with a modern audience.

MR. Darkness transformed the venerable but archaic ESP symbols concept that required a lot of often dull explanations into a story about Druids, Magic, and Divinization that instantly captures the audience’s attention. It is a complete re-imaging of the ESP concept from the imagery to the presentation plot that will completely alter how you think about your ESP effects and the kinds of storylines you can create.

Instead of boring playing cards and patter about science experiments that modern audiences can’t relate to, the Druid ESP cards hook your audience with mystique and magic. The transformation from ho-hum to mysterious and memorable starts with twelve black plastic cards, each about the size and thickness of a credit card. The backs have what appear to be tree roots and branches on a black background. The cards are marked. The markings are so subtle that the spectator will never spot them, but you won’t have any trouble seeing them once you know what to look for.

The face of the cards is also black, with the same intertwined roots motif used for each symbol. The symbols are a pair of circles, triangles, stars, crosses, and squares. There are also two extra cards with arrows on the face. The set comes in a small soft black leather pouch that easily fits into your pocket.

The moment you take out the black pouch, people are instantly interested. Next, take the cards out and let the spectator examine them. Now, you have the person hooked in a way you could never do with plain cards with ESP Symbols.

The cards allow you to perform most of your favorite small packets ESP effects. The cards come with six routines and a 40-page nicely produced booklet.

The strongest effects and patter do NOT center on the usual ESP match-the-card effects. Instead, Druid ESP set focuses on the meaning of each symbol and how they play into the spectator’s life.

I found the pointer card very useful for various storylines and past, present, and future effects. The set of cards is very versatile. Mystery Entertainers will love the cards and the storytelling possibilities.

However, mainstream magicians will also like the unique nature of the cards and the ease with which they can add some ESP and Mentalism effects to their repertoire.

The effects no longer feel like a card trick.

I have a couple of dozen ESP cards, decks, and effects in my collection. Each is a variation on a basic theme with cards that look like playing cards with ESP symbols printed on them. The Druid ESP set stands out from the rest in every respect. I can instantly engage the audience without saying a word by simply taking the wallet out. There is no need for boring scientific experiment storylines to set up the effect. A few almost self-working effects leave the audience with a memorable experience that won’t be remembered as pick a card trick. That is worth the price of the set. Innovative thinking, reimagined graphics, and clever reframing of a classic-of-magic make The Druid ESP set a workhorse effect that you should own.

Highly Recommended.
